Back in the USA!

Hello!

After a 24 hour plus traveling day we finally arrived in San Diego last night.  Two things you must learn to master for this lifestyle: on call sleeping abilities, and eating plane food, even if your not sure its the chicken that you ordered!

Before leaving, we competed in our last game against Holland on Saturday, the game ended as a 2-2 draw, a much improved result from previous games.  This tour has truly been a learning experience for us at a crucial time.  It has opened our eyes to the level we have to maintain for the next three weeks and bring into Beijing.

Today we are back at it with a team lift in our the new heated tent.  The Olympic Training Center has created some form of enclosed workout environment in which you can create high heat and humidity, similar to the conditions we will face in Beijing.  Looks like I should probably start hydrating a bit more for this!

Well I’m off to go down some water, until next time…..

Greetings From Across The Globe!

Hi All!

I would like to start by introducing myself.  My name is Lauren Powley, born and raised in the quaint town of Mountaintop, PA.  I attended Fairview Elementary School and finished my academic career at Wyoming Seminary.  It was there that my passion for field hockey was fostered under coaches, Karen Klassner and Kim Barbacci.  Through much hard work and perseverance we managed to take home a State Championship my senior year, not a bad way to go out!  I continued my hockey career at the University of Maryland, where my field hockey skills and knowledge were able to grow and develop under Missy Meharg, Andrew Griffiths, Tjerk Van Herwaarden, and Marybeth Freeman.

Since college I have been pursuing my lifelong dream to play in an Olympic Games.  As of only recent, has this dream become a reality.  With less than a month until the Opening Ceremonies, we realize that every moment and decision we make can change our future.  For the last two weeks, we have traveled to Germany and Holland to play in some top International competition.  With some significant losses, it has opened our eyes to some key points we need to work on in these next few weeks.

Tomorrow we hop on a plane back to San Diego ready to tackle each and every one of these challenges. With only a few weeks to train until our departure for Beijing, we are ready to lay it all on the line.  Hopefully you will enjoy this column as we give you the inside scoop on USA Field Hockey’s road to the Olypmics.

Until next time…

Lauren
